Painkillers and I are... let's just say "it's complicated"?

Things like Ibuprofen and Advil work just fine for headaches and cramps. They don't even kind of touch my chronic hip/leg issues though... which is all right, I've gotten used to it.

~Hardcore~ painkillers though?

Either they do Jack and Shit or I have weird reactions.

Tramadol... oh god, never touching that shit again. Made the pain 10x worse and I could barely move.

Some painkiller I forgot what it was... was told it would knock me the hell out and I'd feel nothing and it'd be awesome. Had absolutely no reaction to it. None. Pain was the same and I didn't get knocked out or anything.

Now Hydrocodone... it doesn't do much for the regular amount of pain. That still stuck around. I've only taken it when the pain is worse than usual. First time I took it, nothing. Absolutely nothing. Second time... well I got sleepy and a weird buzz off of it but the pain didn't do much. Third time no buzz, the pain lessened a bit, and I was WIDE FUCKING AWAKE. This was last night. I was physically tired and knew I needed the sleep but I was wide awake until, like, 6am.

This is why I hesitate to ask the VA to try anything new as far as painkillers. It's why I tend to just shrug off the idea of them altogether. My body is fucking weird and unpredictable.

At least as far as my hips go a hot bath will calm the pain down a little bit on the bad days. Sometimes. :)

I am so sorry that you are in such pain. I, too, have a complicated 'love to hate them' relationship with painkillers.
Tramodol makes me want to die; I am allergic to it, or so it seems. Even things that sort of work make me feel like a zombie and I can't take any NSAIDS because of allergy issues.

A good deal of my severe pain may be the result of spinal injury and related nerve injury/death. So, to my great surprise, it is not a pain killer at all that helps me most, but a drug first used as an anti-convulsant. Gabapentin leaves me functional AND cuts the pain into manageable bits.

Perhaps you could talk to a doc about a trial, although of course, I don't know if your pain source is of similar causes.

Tramadol makes my dog yack

And he eats garbage.
Now I've got some 50+ tablets of 50 mg sitting on my desk.

Now Hydrocodone... makes me yack. Clarine pulling my hair back as I vomited blood on the street after having my wisdom teeth pulled is my earliest memory of the stuff.
My last memory was vomiting over "distal wedges" - that's where they cut your gums to trim off the diseased portion. NOT a time you want stomach acid in your mouth. They said that was an acceptable side effect so I replied "then put me down for allergic. I don't want that ever again."

Now Kevin is on Lodine. He's so paranoid about being a pill junkie that he's finally thru the first set - only to have had the next 2 refills expire (they expired in JUNE).

But on Thursday he said "This isn't fair, I can't feel my face but my neck still hurts."

So it worked a little on a 6'2 190 frame.
