I feel weirdly uncomfortable and eye-rolly when some one mentions how “unusual” or “unique” they are… because they read. That’s it. They read. Not WHAT they read, or even maybe HOW they read (“I read but only exclusively while hanging upside down”), just… reading. At all.

Frequently this is a subtle way for a woman to say “I’m not like those OTHER girls with their fashion and make-up and gossip, I’m unique, I like books”

Come on, stop that. Plenty of people read, even those girls who are also capable of wearing fun clothes and make-up all while gossiping. Not everyone talks about their reading habits unless it’s about a specific book, but they do read. If anything I’m surprised more when some one says they don’t read at all*. That strikes me as the more unique and special and unusual thing here.

So if your only claim to uniqueness is reading? Look deeper into yourself. Trust me, there’s probably more in there.

(And yes, I’m sorry, even if the only thing some one’s read for fun is the Twilight and 50 Shades series, that does count… we can’t point at an entire series and say “that’s not real reading”… unless we want to expand upon that and start mocking 4-year-olds too. “See Spot Run? Please, call me when you finally pick up some Dostoyevsky.”)

(*If they have, say, vision problems or literally can’t read my reaction is far different)
