Person #1: I like [thing]!
Person #2: Uh-huh sure but know what's better? [Other thing that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the first thing]!

This bugs me. Just reeks of "I'm looking down on you for what you like because what I like, regardless of how relevant that interest is in this conversation, is clearly superior. I don't care that you didn't ask and you're specifically talking about that first thing, let's now focus on what I like."

I dunno. It happens more online than in person, I notice. In person there's slightly less of an urge to turn every conversation into your own personal blog post. Hell I know I'm as guilty as anyone else of fucking this up so there's no need for y'all to comment and point out my flaws. ;)

Hell even just this morning I almost did this. I caught myself before I did it, because it would make me an asshole. It was a slightly different form of this, though... some one posted "please pray for me" and I almost commented along the lines of "I don't pray, but I'll send good thoughts" essentially. Was what I almost said cruel or ill-intended? No. But if I'd said that it'd STILL be me commenting and making it about ME. Who the fuck cares if I pray or not? She didn't ask. No one did. Commenting with that would have been self-centered and egotistical and I would have been taking the focus off of her for no good reason whatsoever.

It's one thing to comment with your own opinions... that's fine. That's conversation. But it's a matter of when and how, I guess. Some one posts with something like "I've had a rough day so I'll watch some [tv show] and relax"... and some one just HAS to comment with "ugh that show is such shit, i can't believe you like it, I'M more into this OTHER show [or book series that said show is based on because I'm not some plebe who watches shows, did I mention I read books and you apparently don't? lol you child]... because i'm an intelligent ADULT"... obviously not verbatim but it annoys the fuck out of me. It makes you look insecure in your own apparent "coolness" and "maturity" in your tastes. Especially when I KNOW the person saying stuff like this and know they're not without their own "immature/stupid" tastes as well - which, by the way, IS FINE. So long as they don't turn around and act like they're superior just because some one else's silly tastes happen to be different.

If the person posts with "I think I might want to check this show out, anyone seen it?" and you comment with the fact that you didn't care for it, fine. But jesus I too often see some one commenting with their hate and making it so fucking personal. "I hate it and you're stupid for even thinking of watching it, as my opinion is the alpha and the omega of opinions and you should obviously not pay attention to anyone else's or god forbid make your own decision which I shall then judge because it makes you less of a respectable human being in my eyes".

This post was supposed to be short. I'm a bit ridiculous. xD
